Privacy Policy

Privacy policy for student web apps developed in this course

This privacy policy applies to the web applications developed and deployed by students and staff of CMPSC 156 (Fall 2026) at UC Santa Barbara as part of their coursework (for example, apps deployed at addresses ending in .cs.ucsb.edu, or run on localhost during development).

These apps are educational projects. They are not commercial products, and they are not official services of UC Santa Barbara.

What information these apps collect

These apps use “Sign in with Google” (Google OAuth) for login. When you sign in, the app receives the following basic profile information from your Google Account:

  • Your email address, and whether Google has verified it
  • Your name (full name, given name, and family name)
  • The URL of your Google profile picture
  • A unique identifier that Google assigns to your account
  • Your Google Workspace domain, if any (e.g. ucsb.edu), and your locale

The apps request only the email and profile permissions (scopes) from Google. They never see or store your Google password, and they do not have access to your Gmail, Google Drive, Calendar, contacts, or any other Google data.

An app may also store information that you choose to enter into it while using it.

How this information is used

The information is used only to:

  • Log you in and identify you within the app
  • Display your name and profile picture in the app
  • Determine whether you are an administrator of the app
  • Allow course staff to grade the assignment

How this information is shared

Your information is not sold, and it is not shared with advertisers or other third parties.

It may be visible to the student developer(s) of the app, to administrators of the app, and to the CMPSC 156 course staff.

How this information is stored

The information is stored in a database associated with the app, hosted on servers operated by the UCSB Computer Science department (or on the developer’s own computer when the app is run on localhost).

Because these are student projects built for learning purposes, you should not enter sensitive personal information into them.

How long this information is kept

These apps and their databases are intended to be temporary. They are typically deleted after the end of the academic quarter in which they were created.

Removing your information

You may ask for your information to be deleted from an app at any time by contacting the developer of that app, using the developer contact email address shown on the app’s Google sign-in consent screen.

You can also revoke an app’s access to your Google Account at any time at https://myaccount.google.com/permissions.

Changes to this policy

This policy may be updated from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page.

Questions

If you have questions about this policy, contact the developer of the app, using the developer contact email address shown on the app’s Google sign-in consent screen.
